Half Term and an Outdoor Theatre Production {The Ordinary Moments #23}

Peter Rabbit Sisters smelling flowers

It’s no secret that I love half term, that I miss E so much when she is at school that each and every week I contemplate keeping her home with me to spend each minute with her that I can and soak it up, to attempt to turn back the time to the days when all we saw was each other. I can’t quite actually believe that we are quickly heading toward her finishing her first year.

As every school holiday comes around now it makes me see the change between her and her little sister more acutely, it’s the time we get to slow down a little and be together. To appreciate what life was like when they spent each and every waking moment in each others pockets, however brief that may have been and makes me a little sad that there wasn’t more of that time for them. As their relationship has evolved I have looked forward to this week so much, I find the time after school a little manic usually as everyone is tired and busy and heading towards bedtime. I actually love the mornings when there is no school, everyone is well rested and there is a whole day of possibilities ahead, like it used to be or like a weekend day every day.

This week they have played together so much more than ever before. It has been a really tough week, hard in lots of ways as my Nana is very poorly but seeing them together has been lovely. There has been real change and it’s so adorable to see, I have been distracted, stressed and a little sad at times yet they have been so sweet together. Consequently it means lots of time at home, I have worked two days and spent time visiting my Nana and having my sister stay with us, we have though managed some trips to the park and the library, E’s all time favourite place.

On Thursday I put everything aside and took them to an outdoor theatre production at a local forestry centre, a performance of Peter Rabbit. They sat so nicely together side by side soaking it in and I of course just watched them – much more than the show itself! The show was interactive and aimed at the younger audience so kept their attention and lasted 45 minutes which I think was a perfect time. We the audience were Mr McGregor’s garden and our patch were radishes, as E is usually really shy I was so pleased when she joined in with the actions fanning her mouth from the hot radish every time they said the word, and she really laughed at the characters antics too, particularly cheeky Peter. Of course as the dynamics of my little sisters go then as soon as E laughed R did too! My – very grown up for her 5 years – little E afterwards asked “Mum were you entertained?” “I think I would enjoy a bigger play a bit more really!” Whilst I may well have pitched a bit low there nevertheless she did enjoy it and it was nice to be able to have something they could both attend, I can’t quite imagine R sitting through a longer play somehow.

It was such a nice day and I was enjoying just being out with them that we decided to take in the surroundings, play in the park, walk in the woods and my little ladies stopped to literally smell the flowers. E noticed the bright yellow patch of buttercups and immediately picked one dashing towards her sister to place it under her chin and show how much she liked butter. I love how much they are teaching each other and that no matter what is going on around them they have one another for love, for comfort and for distraction. If only every week could be half term as where one is, the other follows. When it came time to go home and R ran in the opposite direction of her exhausted Mama and I was at a risk of becoming that hassled parent running after their defiant toddler, who came to the rescue? Who was the one to encourage and bring her back on side? Why E of course, and these gorgeous sisters who have adored spending all their time together over half term walked hand in hand all the way to the car. It really was the sweetest moment, the sweetest day in amongst a very tricky week.

xx

    I am sorry to hear that your nan is poorly. Weirdly my Grandma has been in hospital this half term too, though thankfully not serious, she fell and shattered her hip and has to have had a hip replacement. But a lot of half term has been spent at the hospital. It sounds like you have had a lovely time together, and that outdoor production sounds great, my girls love Peter Rabbit. They are gorgeous photos too. x
