My Little Photographer {The Ordinary Moments #36}

my little photographer

If you hadn’t have guessed before, I love photography. I love taking photos, I love thinking about what would work when we are out and about, I love learning about my camera and how to improve, I love to look at other peoples inspiring photos and I love to look back on all the memories captured for my little family. I just adore it. Being totally self taught I am aware I am not the best and that I still have a lot to learn or that I could do but it is certainly a passion of mine that has grown and grown in the last 2 years. One thing I have never been massively keen on though is being in front of the camera, I have never been a massively confident person, I cringe when I have a photo taken of me and cringe even more looking back at it. But just lately that has started to change, all thanks really, to Eva.

As a way of getting her more involved and understanding the love of being in photos (a necessary skill for a blogger/keen photographer) I would let her take the reigns too, she would ask to take photos of me and I would say yes. I would awkwardly pose and humour her before mostly deleting what she had taken later on. I know that sounds awful but it was just one of those things, never meant for the end product, just for the action itself. Until I started to really look at them, I started to get used to her taking photos of me and as time has gone on she has fallen in love with photography too, and I kind of love that. Whilst I admit I am probably still not the best person to photograph, I am much more comfortable in front of the camera now and she does seem to bring out that natural smile in me that only a child can.

So now we have something to share, a lot of the time if I have my camera I will of course take photos but she will too, she will look for a shot, she will suggest where I might stand, where I might look and direct me in the kindest way. It really is the cutest thing to witness. I have not only started not deleting the photos but surprisingly, loving them. In actual fact a lot of the photos on my Instagram at the moment with me in them are taken by her (or my sister, or my husband, or the self timer but you catch my drift). I love that I can capture the world from her perspective, the way that she sees me everyday which is just amazing.

At the moment Tuesdays are our days, Roma is at nursery and so after school we tend to do whatever takes her fancy, whether that be to stay at home and read, go to a little café together or spend it outside, it is 2 hours of just me and Eva. This week as it was dry and sunny she asked to go crunching in leaves and searching for horse chestnuts. So that is what we did. It was the best time, we chatted about all manner of things and without the distraction of jobs to do at home it was lovely to be 100% in the moment with her, something I think we both struggle with to be honest.

We must have spent half an hour in one spot looking for horse chestnuts under the leaves as there were so many. Every now and then she would hear a rustling in the leaves below and suddenly we were crouched down squirrel spotting as they sensed we were searching for their dinner too! Neither of us flinched when dog walkers or runners went by and ended with overflowing pockets of these shiny treasures ready to take back to Dad to roast! I treasure these days immensely.

As we walked up some steps to get to the “good leaves” (apparently Eva knows where the best, deepest piles are!) She suddenly said “oh this would be a nice place for a photo. Sit down there Mum and let me take one of your lovely jumper”…..I think she might be trying to make a fashion blogger out of me after all! The next 15 minutes were spent taking it in turns to take photos, finding leaves to throw and laughing off the strange looks that we got from passers by as a tiny little 6 year old held a huge DSLR in her hands or we ran back and forth from the self timer before throwing leaves around. For a self conscious person like me, who cares too much about what people think, it was pretty lovely not to give two hoots because we were happy. Happy and content.

Here are just some of the photos from the day that she took (she likes to get click happy), who knows if she will grow to love it as much as I do, who knows if she will take as many photos as her old Mum or maybe even use it as part of her career one day. But for now she is pretty good at it so I will be encouraging my little photographer and appreciating the passion that we can share together.

xx

    What gorgeous photos! I’m so impressed with her skills. I occasionally let me eldest use my camera to take pictures of my husband and I but he tends to chop our heads off or shoot upwards in a terribly unflattering way haha.

    The photos are amazing – how impressive, definitely a budding photographer in the making. How lovely that you have photos of you on your walk too, that’s so lovely. I must teach Emma in time 😉 xx #theordinarymoments

    Beautiful photographs, she’s a mini photographer already! Photography is my passion too, and I think photography helps me notice the little things and spend more time enjoying the moment. It’s brilliant when you have a shared passion, and I love that you spend those two hours together having fun. Outside is my escape to live in the moment, its so hard not to be distracted when at home by the never-ending to-do list! xx

    These are absolutely stunning!!!! Do you know, I always think kids capture their mothers the best of anyone as they capture us exactly how they see us. Do you know what I mean? Like these photos show that she loves you. I love every single one!!!
