Me and Mine – August 2016

Sunset beach family picture france

Wow, what a month this has been. August I have to say has been anything but ordinary and probably a month that I will remember fondly for the rest of my life. As I sat down to write last months Me and Mine post we were on the Ferry to France for the start of our big adventure. And now all of a sudden we are on the return leg of our journey and it seems only fitting to be sat once again on the ferry writing this post. Yet now we are not full of excitement of what August may hold, what adventures we could have and how beautiful the beach would be. We are full of happiness, we have the amazing memories we have made along the way and a reinvigorated love of travel.

It feels surreal for it to be over and even though in some ways I can’t believe it is, I also feel like we have been away so long. Like I don’t remember what it is like to be in my house, to drive on the left side of the road again or to hear English speaking people all around!

We knew that this month would be filled with nothing more than each other, than with Me and Mine. Whilst that was going to be amazing and I couldn’t wait for the chance to slow down a little I have to say I was a little daunted by the prospect too. It was hard at times especially when my Nana passed away and all I wanted to do was be sad and come home. But it was also utterly wonderful. Eddy worked a normal week and so it was me and these little ladies at home, in this little bubble, just us.

We did exciting things and ordinary things and of course it wasn’t all plain sailing but on the whole I sit here now full of really positive memories and to be honest if I could turn around and go back right now I definitely would, and Eva would too.

She has really enjoyed the beach, throwing stones in the sea, digging holes big enough to stand in with dad, making sand chairs, collecting shells, rock pooling and even swimming in the sea. She loved learning some more French, practicing her spelling ready for year one, all the adventures we went on and spending the time together. She has loved the beautiful architecture and the fact that we took some special croissants so that she could have them and when we visited Ile de Batz and found the most amazing dark chocolate sorbet for her!

Roma loved the onion festival which allowed her to ‘drive’ a tractor and shout it at the top of her lungs for everyone to hear, speaking so much more and even some French which is the most adorable thing I have ever heard. Quite simply though, she has loved the time with her big sister, to push her around in a box and pretend it is her beloved pushchair, to have her help brushing her teeth and to be given the biggest ‘pick up cuddles’ Eva can muster. It has definitely brought them closer.

Eddy has enjoyed the time with the girls, days out, the traditional games at the onion festival and almond croissants. He has loved the beach, swimming in the sea and even attempting paddle boarding. He also had a great time improving his French, really enjoyed work and being able to come home for lunch.

Me. Well I have loved this month more than I could ever say. There are so many moments that I struggle to choose even a few or get the words out to really do it justice. Over the next few weeks I have posts to write, photos to share and videos to edit but all in all I have just loved the time it has allowed me with my babies.

To really look at them, study them and be with them. I did find myself a favourite little café so I really enjoyed the coffee there and of course the macarons and croissants, something my waistline isn’t thanking me for now! I have loved taking photos and that everything around was just so beautiful. The freedom to go on adventures after work, to forgo the routines and the bedtimes and chase memories instead.

Even though we were away together and I took thousands of photos, we still didn’t get that many family photo opportunities, mainly because we were so busy adventuring that it didn’t seem the right time to stop and set everything up to take it. Except this night. Eva has been talking for ages about seeing the sun set and I told her we could do it on holiday. She is a little lady who loves routine, who needs her sleep and has been in bed by 7/7.30 every day bar about 3 in her whole 5 and a half years. This is so important to her and of course to me but childhood and life is also about taking the time to have adventures, especially when you are away. To travel the world and see the best of it. So after Eddy got home from work one night we went to a local beach to do just that.

It was the best decision to make. It was the best night ever. I will write about it more in another post but everyone was just happy, and relaxed and so I chanced my arm in getting our family shots there too. The remote didn’t work so we had some running back and forth to do. It was fun, no-one moaned, or cried, or ran off, which is pretty good for us.

I just adore this photo of us holding the children because I see it and re-live that night all over again. That utterly perfect night where we sat huddled together on the beach and watched the sun creep behind the sea and that Eva thought was the coolest thing in the world.

I also had to include these other photo’s aswell, because it’s not very often we have more than one set to choose from. One of my sisters ended up coming to see us the last few days and travel back with us. As we were showing her some of our favourite places I noticed this spot between two buildings and it was stunning, so peaceful and a gorgeous view of the long bridge that I loved to look at so I asked if she would take some photo’s and I love these too.

I am not ready to say goodbye to August, to say goodbye to the summer, to the adventures and the freedom. September might not be set to be as exciting, we have the start of year one for Eva whom I will miss so so much, and an ordinary busy life of getting into the routine of being back. But for me this feeling that we have given her the best summer we could, a summer to remember, this feeling will last a fair few weeks yet.

xx

Oh those photos are beautiful! What an amazing way to spend the summer, though I’m sorry to hear about your Nana. Now the trick is just to keep some of that sunshine memory bottled up against the winter 🙂
