Easy Lego Tractor Cake

Easy Lego Tractor Cake for 2 year old Birthday

I like cooking, I am a bit of a nutrition geek and love filling our days with healthy food. I am not however going to say that I love cooking, this blog isn’t about to be filled with recipe posts and honestly pretty much anything I do cook comes from someone else’s head, thank you Jamie Oliver and Pinterest is all I will say! I do love to bake though.

Since Eva was born I knew that the thing I always wanted to do was to make her birthday cakes. Part of this was due to her multiple allergies and the fact I was overcompensating for her December birthday, but also just because I really enjoyed creating something for her myself. I enjoyed spending hours with my best friend Pinterest for ideas and looking at the end result knowing I made it. The late night decorating and the state of the kitchen after I had finished however, not so much. But of course once I had done it the first year I had to keep going.

This is the first cake I ever made.

By the time I had Roma 4 years later I have to admit I had to press simplify on a lot of things as I think Mums of more than 1 child often do and even Eva’s cake this year was as simple as I could get away with in her chosen Fairy theme. There was no little fondant people, no icing delicate flowers or staying up late. A tub of shop bought chocolate frosting (which was dairy free), little figures, some edible flowers and a sprinkling of icing sugar and there we had it. And do you know what? She absolutely loved it, she was probably more impressed than she ever has been and everyone was happy with this new rustic look, especially Eddy whom didn’t have to contend with the usual kitchen devastation, win win.

So as Roma’s birthday is just 5 weeks later I decided I could do much the same with the help of her favourite thing. Now being only 2 she didn’t really choose a theme but she has always absolutely loved Tractors therefore it seemed like the obvious choice and as my reoccurring best friend Pinterest showed me some great tractor cake ideas I thought this would be perfect. To be honest Roma doesn’t even like cake and so it was more of an elaborate candle holder and a centerpiece to her little tea and cake afternoon than anything else, but you can’t have a birthday without a cake.

I again used the same shop bought frosting to cover the cake, roughly! I crumbled biscuits and chocolate flake for the soil and mixed that with green M&M’s that had been blitzed in the nutribullet around the bottom. With the help of a fork and some lego (her other favourite thing!) I was able to make it look like a field and hey presto a cake decorated in less than 5 minutes.

I may no longer be the Mum who painstakingly makes everything from scratch, no late night mixing of fondant to get just the right colour or painting designs on the top of a perfectly crisp cake but I am totally fine with this new journey of finding creative ways to cheat my way there. I am still able to say I made it and still have very happy children at the end.

xx

Love the Lego tractor cake – so simple but so effective. I do love your first owl cake and the fairy one too. I used to be a lot more creative with cakes too and now I try to go for simpler ideas that look good but are quick and easy to do. The children seem to be happy just as long as they have cake so it’s win-win all round 🙂 #SharingtheBlogLove

I love this idea! My son’s 3rd birthday is coming up and this would be right up his street – and it looks like something I could actually make too! I’m totally taking inspiration from you! Thanks for joining us at #SharingtheBlogLove

You should totally do it, it’s actually quite satisfying making something that looks impressive and takes 5 mins!

I did a post about birthday cakes this week. Yours is such a great idea. We also have to deal with allergies in our house (i’ve got a wheat allergy and Chris has to avoid dairy 🙁 plus me and the kids have oral allergy syndrome). My kids have such elaborate ideas but my abilities are not equal to them! #SharingtheBlogLove

I love it! I was exactly the same when I had Alice, I wanted to bake her cake. Her first cake was in the shape of a number one and it nearly killed me! But I loved doing it. I have definitely had to make them easer over the years and a couple of times my mum and I have done it together. Thank you for joining us at #SharingtheBlogLove x

Haha that made me laugh that it nearly killed you as I remember Eddy saying “why do you do it to yourself!” x
